Tommaso Calini and Alessandra Cervia interpret spaces in the name of balanced connections with the context and full creative freedom

The philosophy of Aptitude Studio, a company based in Milan and operating since 2011, focuses on a winning combination of professionalism, eclecticism, and tailor-made. What is your approach to the project? “First of all, it is essential to analyse the context. Working a lot in Milan, sometimes we rediscover small treasures that have been hidden, such as splendid frescoes revealed by opening false ceilings: from here an interesting recovery process begins. We are also very careful about the conservation of doors, handles, and frames.”
Do you prefer historic buildings? “Milan is very rich in houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which are definitely our favourites. The task that amuses and really motivates us is to tell the client the value of certain elements of the house and the reason for certain choices.”
The name Aptitude is certainly not by chance… “Yes. Aptitude indicates an idea of great openness, a predisposition to listen and to engage with the place and with people.”
How did the studio start? “We met at university, then Alessandra worked for Ferruccio Laviani for many years, while I worked in the Milanese architecture studio DFA Partners. We have a different background, but the goal over time has clearly been shared: the desire to express and create something absolutely our own, naturally working together”.
If you had to define the philosophy of the studio in a nutshell? “Respect is a word that definitely distinguishes us, understood as the attitude to welcome the possibilities, the advice, or the inspiration of someone else…”
