IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF HERMANN HESSE

30/07/2025

A mindful and respectful restoration has breathed new life into a residence that speaks of eternity, set within an enchanting, storybook-like landscape

In the lush heart of Montagnola, just a stone’s throw from the shimmering waters of Lake Lugano, stands a century-old villa that tells stories of art, literature, and architecture.

With its stone walls, expertly restored timber roof, and openings that frame incomparable views, the house has become a destination for enthusiasts and scholars alike, a small treasure chest preserving the timeless allure of the Collina d’Oro.

In the 1950s, a significant modernisation turned the structure into a permanent home: the stone walls were reinforced, timber floors restored, and every opening retained its original orientation towards the landscape, a clear sign of respect for the building’s historic fabric.

The recent restoration of the villa has preserved its soul intact. Although full demolition and reconstruction had been approved, the architects opted for the more challenging route of building upon what was already there.

The result is a harmonious fusion of centuries-old construction techniques and modern systems, ensuring the villa’s presence for many decades to come. Encircling the house, the forest and gardens act as a natural frame.

It is not merely a dwelling, but an ideal meeting point between light and shadow, between the dense woodland and the lake’s glimmer, between the solid weight of stone and the fleeting flight of artistic inspiration.
