MASSIMO ADARIO. WHEN SPACE DEFINES THE PROJECT

03/02/2025

The contexts steal the spotlight in the beautiful environments created by the prestigious Roman architect

Coexistences. Juxtapositions that wink at the history of a space, its territorial or landscape context, as well as cultured references that are never forced, always aimed at giving life to an atmosphere deeply rooted in the present. Delving into the projects of architect Massimo Adario means encountering genuine style gems…

Your hallmark is precisely not chasing a predefined stylistic signature. Is that correct? “Exactly. All my projects start by looking at the context and its peculiarities, making them the true elements of differentiation. I have never sought a true stylistic signature; I always try to be myself, adapting to the place rather than imposing myself on it.”

Among the studio’s flagship projects is the stunning Roman house of architect Adario himself, located in the historic Palazzo Sacchetti on Via Giulia. “In this space, I really sought an intimate dialogue with the prestige of the context – a majestic 16th-century palace characterized by a high wooden ceiling with blue-toned decorative details. Interestingly, the choice came almost by chance, when I stumbled upon an advertisement to which I hadn’t initially given much importance. I gave it a try, and luck, I must say, has favoured me.”

How did you start collecting? “Thanks to friendships with people who introduced me to this world. My approach to a project is not the classic one… So, it’s not about having a recognizable style, but rather a recognizable approach.”

Is interpreting a space, dressing it in the client’s image, still a challenge? “Honestly, I would like them to always give me carte blanche – smiles the architect – but I realize that it’s not possible. In reality, the project is always made by the customer, and I rightly add. If an idea were to distort my nature, I prefer not to deal with it. And, let’s be clear, it is not an act of presumption” concludes architect Adario.
