Chafic Mekawi is a Canadian-Lebanese designer and digital artist, based in Dubai. Chafic’s cross-disciplinary artistic style is inspired by his architectural design background and Middle Eastern roots
Harnessing the fundamental elements of craft and architecture, his work champions the rich tapestry of cultures and narratives that are frequently overlooked.

Chafik tells us about the story behind Carpet edition: As a third culture kid, I’ve always been fascinated by how different cultures blend together. I discovered that oriental carpets are unique in that they are both universal yet deeply personal. Each carpet tells a story. In my work, I incorporate Oriental and Persian carpets by reinterpreting their patterns and textures in a contemporary or unexpected context.
When I first started hearing about the preparations for the Olympics, it started as a conceptual exploration. Like most of the artworks, it begins with a question. In “Carpet Court“, it was what if I merged different vernaculars from the East with a tennis court?

Which is the meaning of the rule of the carpet? “In my works, the carpet often serves as a symbolic threshold—a boundary that invites exploration beyond the physical and the familiar. For me, the carpet is more than a decorative object, it is a gateway, inviting the viewer to step into another dimension or narrative within the artwork.”
