IN THE SHADOW OF VESUVIUS

31/03/2025

In Pompei, an apartment has been renovated in the name of reclaimed pre-existing materials and recovery of furnishings

Recovering, by taking into account environmental sustainability, is the basic philosophy that guided architect Simona Arcasi and the interior designer Rosanna Farella, in the renovation of this interesting apartment, in a building from the 1960s placed in Pompei.

The designers told us: “We have chosen to leave the pre-existing marble as flooring in the living area, working on the systems without ruining the surface. In fact, the systems were made on vertical surfaces and the plasterboard. In the sleeping area, for structural reasons related to the water and electrical systems, we had to remove the flooring. Once removed, the marble was recovered to give life to the top of the kitchen and some furnishing accessories for the bedrooms and bathrooms.

In addition, to reduce the scrap of floors and coatings, we cut the tiles into small pieces, using them to define some areas of the flooring and the coating.”

The spaces obtained reveal such a vintage mood, with accents of the last decades of the 20th century. Furniture and furnishings are mostly recovered and reclaimed: the chairs and pouffes have been taken from old houses, repainted and upholstered again, to make them comfortable and charming in their current location. The ever-present family memories have been rediscovered, as well as the small reproductions of famous works of art of classic style.

The chromatic choices, especially in the kitchen and the living room, are alluring and winning. The white breakfast table and the black and white striped chairs recall the optical art of the 70s.

From the hallway to the bedrooms, wallpaper with romantic and classic ruins dominates on several walls: almost a tribute to the grandeur of the Pompeian houses and temples, buried by the tragic Vesuvian eruption in 79 AD.
