Accuracy, formal composure, artisanal approach. The prestigious interior designer with a studio on Via Montenapoleone, in Milan, follows the logic of a boutique for sophisticated and timeless projects.
Compositional balance and formal cleanliness. In a single word, elegance, in its most genuine sense, that is, free from excesses, forcing of any kind or banal concessions to the fashions of the moment. There is another term that perfectly describes Andrea Bonini’s work: authenticity; the one he adopts in his design approach and selection of materials.

A prestigious interior designer, Andrea Bonini is the owner of the studio of the same name founded in 2014 and located in the cradle of Milanese design, on Via Montenapoleone. He works in three different fields: interior design for public and private sectors all over the world (Asia, the United States, the French Riviera, and the United Kingdom, in addition to Italy), product design for companies, and Andrea Bonini Edizioni, the design edition collection in limited series with products linked to Italian craftsmanship.

Andrea Bonini specified: “These are mainly tailor-made projects that often interface with each other. The studio operates with a very selective and accurate approach. We are placed in a very high market segment so it is normal to expect choices of this type from the customer. Unfortunately, in today’s world, it is widespread that to be contemporary, one must necessarily appear extravagant or outside the box. On the contrary, I think that there is a formal cleanliness and a consequent way of working that can be defined as timeless, which therefore results in universally beautiful projects, disconnected from the contingency of the moment”.

Do you particularly love natural materials?
“Absolutely. For us, they are of the utmost importance. It happens with fabrics, wood, and glass. I don’t like industrial materials, the result of chemical compositions.”

Do you follow particular “rituals” in your design?
“I draw by hand. I love this mode. I always draw, from morning to night, even when I’m not in the studio. Unfortunately, it is a practice that is being lost, but it actually remains very valuable. Drawing by hand makes you understand how an object is made and how it can be placed in space. Then, obviously, I combine hand drawing with 3D modellers and latest-generation software.”

How would you present your studio?
“The idea is that of a boutique: few works but designed with extreme accuracy. It is located in Palazzo Melzi di Cusano, among the most historic buildings in the city. We are on the ground floor, in a space originally used as stables. In the working area and in the one dedicated to the exhibition of Andrea Bonini Edizioni, there are splendid granite columns, dating back to around 1400 – prior to the construction of the building –, but also arched vaults which, during the renovation, we adequately illuminated.”
An evocative space, therefore, which also talks about the modus operandi of the studio…
“Exactly. In fact, a fundamental prerogative of our design is also attention to the genius loci.” And in this sense this place is perfect because it tells the story of historical Milan and explains how a space can change in its nature and intended use.”

What’s cooking for the Milan Furniture Fair?
“We will present a capsule collection for a brand, then installations for Fuorisalone, and then we will open the studio as a meeting place for customers and friends.”
Other new projects?
“Andrea Bonini Edizioni was born in 2022 with about fifteen pieces, which we sell around the world through foreign galleries, mostly American. At the end of 2023, a new collection was added: 20 very particular items, from design editions, in a limited series. It ranges from accessories and lamps to upholstered furniture, together with objects, but also more architectural elements.”
There is something for all tastes, therefore. Naturally in the name of authentic and contemporary elegance.
