House calls colour…

03/10/2023

Elegance plays with colour and its combinations, making this living path intense and cheerful, as a daily hug.

In Manhattan, north of Houston Street, there is a famous neighbourhood that takes the abbreviation of these two words, called NoHo. During the 18th century, NoHo was considered one of the city’s wealthiest districts.

Over time, it has undergone changes and, from residential, it had turned into industrial; at the end of WWII, the manufacturing companies gradually moved to other industrial centres, and at the beginning of the 70s, NoHo once again became famous for its large lofts, mostly inhabited by young artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The flat we are about to
visit is located on Astor Place, the hub of the neighbourhood. After months of research around the city, the customer, a young woman, decided to entrust the task to interior designer Alicia Kinloch, who lives in New Jersey. At the time, Alicia had just opened her own design studio after working for years as a senior designer for a large company. The interior designer told us:interior designer“With the customer, we understood each other right from the start regarding organization and choices: it was all very constructive and fluid, perhaps also because my customer grew up in a family that regularly worked with designerstherefore, serene familiarity reigned in following the entire process necessary for designing a living space.””.

The flat is located inside a building built by Nava Architects; David Nava, in addition to being the builder, was also the architect. Having purchased the space when it was still under construction, it was easy to request changes to the original plan and to modifythe lighting system, having a wall removed so as to be able to expand the space between the living room, the dining area and the kitchen, thus also adding an open space for the TV area.

Alicia Kinloch started this project by thinking about the arrangement of the furniture, as she usually does. Once you have established how to make the space accessible, comfortable and fluid, the next step focuses on finding the right sofa. She wanted a comfortable and extra-large one, with the highest flexibility and a backrest that did not impact on the living area on one side and on the TV corner on the other.

Since her customer is a young woman, she wanted to give her the chance of hosting evenings or meetings in the living area or relaxing movie nights in front of the wall that houses the large TV.

Alicia Kinloch added: “It’s a large space, and every single piece had to be interesting to look at, but it also had to find a balance so that overall, the whole thing didn’t seem too heavy or even distracting.” Playing onbalance,we see how the idea of covering the corridor leading to the bedroom with a graphic black and white striped wallpaper by Kelly Wearstler for Lee Jofa perfectly matched the atmosphere of the main bedroom area. The original wallpaper of Calicocombined with a double bed by Ligne Rosetgives a strong feeling of relaxation. The office is no exception, where a fantastic wallpaper by Pierre Frey surprisingly introduces us to mythical sculptures and fantasy lands, interspersed with vintage pieces such as the desk, the lamp and the Royère-style chair. Alicia Kinloch concludes: “This project allowed me to show who I wanted to be.”
