An ancient farmhouse in Apulia has been masterful-ly restored with new functionality, preserving several of its original features.
Behind Ostuni, in Apulia, in the heart of Itria Valley, a few kilometres from the sea, Mrs Pinotta – inter-preter/translator and personal trainer originally from Apulia – and her husband Renato – a well-known Neapolitan businessman – have decided to start the restoration work of an existing stone farmhouse bu-ilt in 1928. It all stemmed from the desire to own a shelter in an area so loved by the spouses.
The result? A magnificent contemporary home that retains the charm and the memory of its past. All the “carriage vaulted ceilings” in light stone have been restored, and some of the original cement tiles of the old floor plans have been masterfully incorporated into the current floor, while one has been entirely moved outside to the new veranda, placed behind the cottage.

The internal path of this charming home winds over an area of 350 square metres, divided into a dining room with guest bathroom, living room, kitchen with adjoining half bath, veranda with large opening windows, and three bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. The stoneware used in the master bathroom is unique, and the same goes for both the floor and the walls, while all the taps and fittings are made of tumbled brass… And, last but not least, there are five terraces, one of which is lit by LEDs, placed behind large orange cushions!
Outside, a suggestive fireplace dominates the environment. A very modern spa – with an adjoining Shou Sugi Ban sauna and a Turkish bath – has been created in the basement. At the end of the staircase leading to the spa, there is “Cactus”, an artwork by the Neapolitan artist Danilo Ambrosino; four ceramic agave leaves are placed in the recesses, created by artist Enza Fasano from Grottaglie.

To add that simple and elegant allure that marks “Ddò”, which means “Here” in the local dialect – this is the name of the farmhouse –, the interior designer Leo Ancona has managed to mix and merge the ideas of Pinotta and Renato with his own. In every season of the year, thanks to the mild climate, beyond the swimming pool, the landscape stretches over a relaxing four-hectare surface of cultivated and well-kept land, among the beauty of thirty olive trees, some walnut and cherry trees, but also pear trees and fig trees.

Concerning the furnishings, we asked the owners what was the common thread of their choices: “The decor is completely new in every single element, with the addition of some contemporary design pieces;instead, the beds, bedside tables and fixtures were custom-designed, and handmade by a local car-pentry”.
Ddò is the perfect shelter during the warm months, while during the rest of the year, they go back to Naples, a lively and unique hub, as only the great art cities can be.
